I so wanted to like this book: its subject is so worthwhile and there are descriptive passages that make you catch your breath, but only the story of the terror rings true. ![]() Then, and this is almost unforgiveable, the former nun who saves Sage (long story) is Mary DeAngelis. This Study Guide consists of approximately 46 pages of chapter summaries, quotes, character analysis, themes, and more - everything you need to sharpen your knowledge of The Storyteller (Jodi Picoult). Then, having hidden in a New England community for 70-odd years, Josef promptly starts behaving towards Sage like a concentration camp guard. Almost immediately Josef’s past is revealed, eked out over a few more pages but not much. We are told that Sage and Josef form a deep bond of understanding, without any description of that bond. However, when we return to modern day, the story doesn’t work for the simple reason that Jodi does not allow time for the momentum to build up.įrom the moment Josef appears you know he is former SS because he is a ninety-plus German and the book is about the Holocaust. ![]()
